Be Encouraged

Christians, be encouraged; the Lord is good.  I believe we face an uncertain future as a result of the election and because of how the Christian message is being framed by the media.  We are close to a point where it will not be to anyone’s advantage to claim to be Christian.  But remember this,

“God is more concerned about advancing the gospel than He is about preserving a moral culture.” – N.W. Clerk

People, in general, say they like the tolerant, wise, peace spreading Jesus but say they can’t stand His followers.  The irony I see in this is that the followers of Christ that I know are some of the most warmhearted, take-my-coat-off-my-back-and-give-it-to-you-if-your-cold people I know.

What I am hearing and seeing firsthand from friends who are not Christian is that they hate our message because we are standing for traditional morality.  Many of these people, like on the TV show “The New Normal” are shaping public opinion by setting up a straw-man argument about Christianity: in that show they show a woman in her 70s ignorantly bashing homosexuals and then the 9-year-old granddaughter says, “Grandma, you’re a bigot!” This framing of the Christian story makes it look like we are mean-spirited people who need to be pitied for our un-enlightened perspective (FYI – the Christians I know love all people, but disagree with the morality of homosexuality – this doesn’t make them mean-spirited).

Friends, this is just the beginning.  As the Christian label becomes a major disadvantage in the public sphere, we will need to dig deeper in our resolve to follow Christ and His commands based on a commitment that supersedes our emotions (see 1 John 5:2-3).

Friends, the future seems uncertain, but we have certainty in Christ about how everything will end; Jesus will return and we will reign with Him victorious (1 John 5:4-5; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Philippians 2:5-11; and Revelation 20-22).  So when you are feeling frustrated, discouraged, alone, or like you are swimming up a stream against a very strong current, know this:

“[We are to] stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” – 1 Cor. 15:58

Election Results & Our Response

To all Christians – this election outcome gives us an opportunity now to live out of our principles based in Scripture and show that we are Christians by our lifestyle and with our words.  May we follow all of Jesus values: to love God with our entire being, to care for the poor, to love our neighbor as ourselves, to guard our eyes from covetousness and greed and lust, to be faithful to our God, to be faithful to our spouses, to protect our children, to teach them to love, to teach them to discern truth from error, to pray, to seek the Spirit’s guiding voice, to love those who do not love us, to turn the other cheek, to not cast judgment, to judge between ideas and potential consequences, to build our Christian communities based on these principles, and to be a beacon of light and salt that preserves.
May God the Father be praised through Jesus His Only Son, and may the Spirit bring praise to Jesus through Christians as we live and believe rightly.  Amen.
